I will be marching tomorrow, January 20, 2018, in Seattle. It’s been a year since the most amazing march ever, and women are still under attack by Congress every time I turn around. Birth control, abortion, Title IX, CHIP, Obamacare, Dreamers, gun control, the environment, justice, facts, science – everything I care about is under attack. The media obsess over Trump’s tweets and report on Congress as if nothing has been accomplished. In reality, Trump has managed to roll back progress on a wide array of issues via executive order and (de)regulation.
I’ve read that women are divided this year (usually, we agree with other women 100% on every issue, don’t you know) between women who think marching is important and women who think other kinds of action are important. That’s the silliest thing I’ve read in a long time. Lots of action followed on the march a year ago, and taking one day a year to march doesn’t mean we won’t do anything else.
I’ve thought about what sort of sign to carry, but I can’t boil my rage down to anything that will fit on a sign. So in lieu of a sign, I’m taking my umbrella (which I might need) that reads: I’d Rather Be Eating Chocolate. That about sums it up for me; fighting to keep control of my body, my healthcare, my safety, and fighting for vulnerable people everywhere is not my idea of the best way to spend a Saturday.
